Fremont Township, Steuben Co, IN: first known as Brockville Twp, was afterward named after the famous pathfinder, John C. Fremont. It is four miles north and south and 5 3/4 miles east and west. It is 15.000 acres, of which 600 are covered by water. Fred Bower is listed as having settled in the township before 1840. James Critchfield is also listed here.
. Both he and Michael Bower are listed as having been original land owners in the county. Frederick bought land in 1835 in Section 17 and Section 21 of Fremont township. Michael Bower is listed in Steuben township, having purchased land in 1835 in Section 9 and 1836 in Section 10. I do not know is Michael is Fred's son or his brother. He is probably a son because he is serving in the same regiment as Jacob Crichfield in the Civil War.
Last name on all records is BOWER with no S.
