Biography

Ann Bowers was the seventh of the eight children of Henry Bowers (1812-1847) and his wife Ann Bailey (1810-?). She was born in Wicken and married James Simpson Bishop (1842-1901), a labourer also of Wicken. The couple went on to have fifteen known children. Sadly, when the youngest child was just 2 years old, Ann died leaving her large young family and widower James. After Ann's death, her childless older sister, Sarah (married to George Farby of Little Thetford) stepped in to helped look after the children and earned herself the affectionate name of "Granny Farby" and continued to look after her niece's and nephew's children as well.

Ann's birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1843 in the Newmarket district.[1]

In 1851, Ann was 8 years old and was at her grandmothers Elizabeth Bailey[2]

Ann married Simpson Bishop on 14th May 1860 at Wicken, Cambridgeshire [3]

In 1861, Ann was living in Market Street, Fordham and working as a Field Labourer, she was 18 years old [4]

In 1871, Ann was living in Wicken, Cambridgeshire. She was 27 years old and working as a Coprolite Labourer [5]

  • Cambridgeshire's oddest industry was coprolite-digging, the extraction of phosphatised clay nodules for fertiliser. Coprolites occurred in a belt from Soham to Barrington and were exhausted in a rush between 1850 and 1890. It was an industry unique in England. Nodules were excavated in trenches, yielding 300 tons an acre.

In 1881, Ann was living in High Street, Wicken and was 37 years old. [6]

She passed away in the first quarter of 1889 in Ely.[7]

Ann was buried in Little Thetford, Cambridgeshire.
