Biography

Scottish flag
John Bowie was born in Scotland.

John Alexander McLeod Bowie was born in Elgin on 10 February 1877 and was the son of John Bowie and Margaret McLeod.[1]

On the 1881 census, John is living in Burnside House, Elgin, with his parents and siblings. His father is a journeyman shoemaker.[2] On the 1891 census, John is living with his parents at Crossley, Elgin, where he is attending school. Five more siblings have been born.[3]

John married Elizabeth Gerrard in Forres, Moray, on 29 March 1905. The marriage certificate confirms William and Ann as Elizabeth's adoptive parents and notes John is a police constable.[4] Elizabeth and John settled in Moray and had seven children, however they eventually moved down to Surrey.

  1. Elizabeth Margaret Ann (Bowie) Miller (1906–2004)
  2. Kathleen McLeod (Bowie) Harrison (1907–1991)
  3. Bella (Bowie) Puddock (1908–1995)
  4. James Gerrard Bowie (1909–1997)
  5. John Walker Coutts Bowie (1911–1942)
  6. Jean Mary (Bowie) Calder (1912–2003)
  7. William Robert Bowie (1914–1941)

On the 1911 census, John, a police constable, and Elizabeth are living at 55 Main St, Elgin, with their children: Elma (5 years), Kathleen (3 years), Belle (2 years) and James (1 year).[5]

On the 1921 census, John, a lance sergeant, and Elizabeth are living at 31 St Michael's Road, Aldershot, Surrey, with their children: Elizabeth (15 years), Kathleen (14 years), Belle (13 years), James (11 years), John (10 years), Jean (8 years) and William (6 years).[6]

On the 1939 Register, John, a widower, is living in Aldershot, Hampshire, with his daughter, Edna (Elizabeth), who is staying with him while her husband is on war duty. John is working as a printer's timekeeper.[7] The Second World War would take its toll on the family as John would lose two sons, John Coutts Walker Bowie and William Robert Bowie, as well as his son-in-law, Robert Alexander Miller, who was married to his daughter, Elizabeth.

John Alexander McLeod Bowie died, aged 83 years, on 14 May 1960.[8]
