Biography

1776 Project
Private James Bowie served with 76th Regiment of Foot during the American Revolution.

James was born in 1751. He joined the 76th Regiment of Foot (MacDonald Highlanders) in 1777 at Paisley, and served as a blacksmith. He was captured at Yorktown, released at the war's end, and discharged from the army at New York in 1783. He came to Nova Scotia in 1784.[1] In 1785 he received a grant of 100 acres at Chedebucto (Guysborough Township) in Sydney County (now called Guysborough County) [2], in addition to a 5 acre lot and town lot granted in 1790.[3]He married Margaret Desson on 28 Nov 1788. They had four children: William (b. 28 Mar 1790), Isabel (b. 24 May 1791), James Jr (b. 26 Jun 1794), and George (b. 4 Aug. 1797). He passed away in 1836.
