Biography

  • 179 Susie Bowie gave birth to a fine boy: Edward Han Bowie, third son born at "Grassland" to Thomas John Bowie and Susannah (Anderson) Bowie. Born on March 29, 1874. In 1893, he became employed with the United States Weather Bureau with which he was associated throughout his employment career. He was stationed at Washington, D.C. from 1908 until 1924.

When the United States entered World War I, Mr. Bowie was transferred to the U.S. Army with the rank of Major. He was assigned to weather forecasting for the American Expeditionary Force in France, and his office was literally ontop of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. In 1924, Mr. Bowie was transferred to San Francisco, California, as the officer in charge of the West Coast Weather Bureau. On December 12, 1895, Mr. Bowie was married at Montgomery, Alabama, to Florence Clara Hatch, who was born on October 11, 1874,at Oregon, Illinois, to Alonzo Perry Hatch and Clara lavinia (McKinstry) Hatch, and she died at Oakland, California, on November 9, 1947.

They were the parents of three children: Helen McKinstry Bowie (married Louis Watkins Pentiss); Margaret Lowndes Bowie (married Ralph Waverly Wallace); and Susannah Anderson Bowie (married Arnold John Lindquist, Sr.). Mr. Bowie died on August 29, 1943, and is buried at Arlington National cemetery.

Bowie, died at Berkeley, California, August 1943. He was President of the American Meteorologioal Society. Dr. Bowie was in the service of the United States Weather Bureau since its organization in 1891, except during World War I when he was a Major in the Signal Corps and made meteorological forecasts in France for the A.E.F. Dr. Bowie married 12 December 1895 Miss Florenoe Clara Hatch of Oregon, Illinois, and left three daughters: Mrs. Helen McKinstry Prentiss, wife of Col. Louis Prentiss, Corps of Engineers, U.S.A., Fort Belv~ir, Virginia, Mrs. Margaret Lowndes Wallace of San Diego, California, Mrs. Susanna Bowie Lindquist of Berkeley, California. Mary Tasker Bowie, daughter of John and Susannah (Anderson)
