DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nelson by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nelson:
I am convinced that Nelson's mother was Minerva Rice (or Minerva Unknown).
David married twice, first in 1749 to SARAH HUGHES, perhaps born about 1730 at Virginia. Sarah died about 1753 at Virginia. David then married perhaps about 1755 at Cane Ridge, Bourbon, Kentucky, WINNIFRED MINERVA RICE (or possibly UNKNOWN), daughter of UNKNOWN FATHER and MOLLY (UNKNOWN) RICE. Rice could be the name of Winnifred’s father, or a second marriage of her mother, Molly.
David Bowles’ Last Will and Testament was dated on 20 February 1800 and recorded at Bourbon County, Kentucky in Will Book C, Page 195-198. David's will mentions his wife “Winney” Bowles and her mother “Molley Rice”.
David died on 20 February 1806. His widow, Winnie Bowles married Bowles Wakeland (or Boyles Weaklin).
Researcher Cheryl R. Houin found documents of the disbursement of the Widow Bowles's (AKA Winnifred Payne) dower and the executor's report for the settlement of Capt. David Bowles's estate filed in January of 1810. She found that Bowles Wakeland received money--indicating that he was alive after Winnie married Jesse Payne. It appears that Winnie and Bowles Wakeland were divorced shortly after they married on 6 February 1807. Winnifred Wakeland then married Jesse Payne on 6 July 1807.
In the period 1807-1809 payments were made for the schooling of both Thomas and Elizabeth Bowles, children of David Bowles. This indicates that the birthdates of both were around 1790 to 1793. Cheryl said, “Molly Rice was still alive and kicking in 1810.”
The Bowles DNA Project Kit #47583 shows Jesse Bowles as a son of David Bowles and Sarah Hughes. Nelson is the son of David Bowles and "Winny" Rice.
I am trying to sort some of this family, too. I think there are two Socrates Bowles, one born 1795, the other 1821, and they got conflated and merged. If one looks at the numerous Bowles households in Bourbon County censuses 1810-1830, there are many still unrepresented on WikiTree. I have not gotten very far figuring out who's who.
Bowles-1953 and Boles-403 appear to represent the same person because: This unmerged match needs to be completed. Clearly the information on Bowles-1953 should be used as it has a source for the information.
Boles-403 and Bowles-1953 are not ready to be merged because: They are the same person, but first we'll have to resolve his mother, and his date and place of birth.
Boles-403 and Bowles-1953 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person. Bowles is the spelling of the last name on the marriage certificate.
