Franklin Moore Bowlin, the son of Joseph and Barbara (Ayers) Bowlin was born near Sommerfield, Addison Twp. Somerset Co., Pennsylvania on January 27, 1855. Franklin was sent to school in Sommerfield, Pennsylvania until he was fourteen years old, when the family removed to Iowa and settled in Ottomwa, Wapello County. When he was sixteen years old he engaged in the grocery business, which he followed until 1876.
In March 1877, he, in company with his brother, came to Harlan, Iowa and engaged in general mercantile trade, which they followed successfully until 1881 when he sold to his brother. He then engaged in the hardware business, in which he continued until 1886, which he sold out. On January 1, 1887, he engaged with Mr. Paup, to be Bowlin and Paup, brokers.
In the spring of 1888 Mr Bowlin was appointed mayor of Harlan and in March, 1889, he was re-elected.
Franklin was married December 14, 1879 to Reppa Lovila Brazie,the daughter of Peter and Sarah (Mahan) Brazie.
