Ellie was born about 1874. Ellie Bowling was the daughter of Henry Bowling and Samantha M. Turner Bowling. [1]
Joseph Ellie Looser and Ellie Bowling were married [2] on January 1, 1891 in Chambers County.
In the U. S. Census (22 June 1900), the family was in Milltown, Chambers County, Alabama. [3] They had four children and all were living in 1900. The children included Henry age 7, Flora age 6, Verna D. age 4, and Willie age 1. All of the children were born in Alabama except Verna. She was born in Texas. The family would have been there after December 1893 when Flora was born and before January 1899 when Willie was born. Verna was born in 1896 in Texas. There is also a tax record of J. E. Looser in Bell County, Texas in 1896. [4] It seems likely they were there for a fairly short time.
The U. S. Census in 1910 (18 April 1910), [5] the family was in Wise, Chambers County. This was the first census in which the farm was owned and not rented. There was a mortgage on the farm, however. Joseph was a farmer doing general farming and employing others. His employees were likely his sons, who are listed as farm laborers. They had nine children and all were alive in 1910.
In the 1920 U. S. Census (28 January 1920), [6] the family was still in Wise and Joseph owned his farm without a mortgage. The three oldest children were missing from the family. There were three new children since the last census (Cooper, Laura and Lula) for a total of nine in the household. All of the older children were attending school and the boys were also farm laborers on the home farm.
In the 1930 U. S. Census (24 April 1930), [7] they were still in Wise. Only the four youngest children were still at home. Olin was 20 and Cooper was 18 and both were working as farm laborers. Laura was sixteen and Lula was fourteen. They were both attending school.
In the 1940 U. S. Census (11 April 1940), it indicates that in 1935 the family was in rural Chambers County, Alabama. In 1940 they lived in Lanett. They owned a home valued at $800 at 118 Broad Street. It indicates he was not working but had other income. Ellie F. was still keeping house. Lula V. was the only child still at home. She was twenty-two and working in the cotton mill in the carding room. The record shows that Joseph completed 8th grade, and Ellie completed sixth grade.
Joseph died on 11 Jul 1947 and was buried at Pleasant Grove Congregational Christian Church, Chambers, Alabama. [8]
She passed away in 20 June 1953 in Chambers County, Alabama.[9] [10] She was buried next to her husband Joseph at Pleasant Grove Congregational Christian Church, Chambers County, Alabama. Their double headstone list them as Mrs. Ellie Looser and Mr. Ellie Looser. At some point they came to share the same name.
I have seen Ellie's name given as Fluellen and a middle name as Givy that need further documentation. The "Givy" middle name comes from the 1880 U. S. Census [11] but there is so much incorrect spelling in the record it is difficult to know if this was actually the correct middle name.
