Biography

William was born about 1823 in Illinois. William appears to be the son of John Bowling and Elizabeth Woodhead. In the 1850 census they are listed next to each other.[1][2] This Elizabeth would be about 45 at the time of William's birth, so they may have been grandparents or an uncle and aunt.

Family

WIlliam married Ellen Cunningham in 1843.[3] They were the parents of eight children:

Civil War Union Service

Private William Bowling served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 1862
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 115th Regiment, Illinois Infantry

WIlliam, and his eldest son Silas, served in the Civil War. He was a member of the 115th Illinois Infantry, Company D. He mustered in during the fall of 1862 and died in Danville, Kentucky a few months later on 25 Jan 1863.[4][5][6] He probably died of disease as records used the word "died" in official records, while others are listed as "killed" along with a battle name. At the time of his death the 115th Infantry was not engaged in any battles or campaigns.
