Elizabeth Bowling was born before, and christened on, 25 October 1641 in Standish, Lancashire, England [1][2], the daughter of Hughe Bowling and Ellen Finch.
She had an older sister named Elizabeth, who had been born in 1635 but who had died in 1637/38. As was the custom, another child of the same gender who was born after a child died would possibly be given the same first name. This was not so much about keeping a memory of the child, but keeping the family names perpetuated.
Elizabeth migrated to Maryland, British Colonial America some time after 1658, as her brother James had been the first of Hughe and Ellen (Finch) Bowling's children to move across to Maryland to escape the religious persecution suffered by Roman Catholics in England [2].
She married Thomas Speake (1633–1681) before November 1663 at St. Mary's, Maryland, British Colonial America [3]. Thomas had arrived from England prior to1662, Elizabeth and Thomas were the parents of John Speake, Richard Speake, Millicent Speake and Bowling Speake.
Elizabeth died before 7 May 1692 in Leonardtown, St Mary's, Maryland, British Colonial America [4] as, while her brothers Thomas and John were, she was not named in her brother James Bowling's Will dated 7 May 1692 [5].
