James, son of James Bowman (1805-1874) and Barbara Ann (Spring) Bowman (abt.1815-1888), was born about 1835-6 in Thornhill, York County, Upper Canada (Ontario). He grew up in Markham, Canada West (still Ontario!), with his parents and siblings.[1][2] In 1876, he was working as an "inspector" and was also serving as a justice of the peace in Markham Township.[3] In 1881, he was the Almira postmaster there.[4] He also farmed.
James Bowman was married twice. Following the death of his first wife, he married Eliza Bradshaw Wass (b. ca. 1849, daughter of John Wass & Mary Bradshaw) in Toronto on May 17, 1911.[5] James died on Oct. 23, 1923 in Toronto,[6] and was bured in Toronto's Mount Pleasant Cemetery.[7]
