Biography

**** biography still in progress ****

Adeline "Ann" Bowman was born about 1815 in England to unk parents (at this time). [1]

"Ann" married Joseoh Thomas Bell on 3/2/1844 in Wolsingham, Durham, England. [2]

Joseph and "Ann" apparently had four (4) of their eight (8) children out of wedlock: Edward Evert Bell, Ann Bell, William H. Bell, and Mary Bell. All these children were born before the 1844 marriage date. [3]

Joseph and "Ann" had four (4) more children after their official marriage: Thomas Bell, Joseph Bell, Elizabeth Bell, and Margaret Bell. [3]

All the children were born in England, and the family was documented in several Census' during the years between 1851 and 1871. [1, 3, 4]

Sometime between the last England Census in 1871, and the death of "Ann" in 1874, Joseph, "Ann", and their last child living at home, Margaret, immigrated to America. Documents support their son, Joseph, remained in England, and married Lucy A. ???, and their daughter, Elizabeth, married John Etherington. [5, 6, 7, 8]

There is documentation supporting some of their children, in particular, Edward Evert Bell and William H. Bell had already immigrated to America before their parents made the voyage. They were soldiers in the America's Civil War. Both sons fought on the side of the Union forces, and were enlisted with Company A, 2nd Maryland Cavalry from 1863-1864. [9]

"Ann" is noted as dying in Baltimore City, Maryland on 6/28/1874. She was buried in the family burial plots at Western Cemetery in West Baltimore City (3001 Edmonson Ave). She would be joined there by her husband, Joseph, upon his passing on 2/27/1876.

This information is submitted by her 3rd great-grandson, Raymond Howard, from personal knowledge and Ancestry research.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ann by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ann:

There is no evidence that there was ever an Adeline Bowman in the Weardale district. There are no records which mention an Adeline Bowman or Adeline Bell. That is, no baptism, marriage, burial, no census records or baptisms of children. Perhaps Adeline Bowman is not the same person as the Ann Bowman whose English records appear here.
