George Bowman, son of Rev. George Augustus and Ernestine (Lord) Bowman, was born 5 Jan 1860, in Manchester, New Hampshire, and died 5 Sep 1941,[1] in Boston, Massachusetts.[2]
The headline of his obituary reads: "George Bowman Is Dead at 82. Mayflower HIstorian Founded S.A.R. Here." His funeral services were to be held at his home 9 Walnut Street, Beacon Hill, Boston, followed by burial in East Hartford, Ct. Mr. Bowman, historian, editor and founder-secretary of the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants died suddenly at the Massachusetts General Hospital.[2]
A descendant of Mayflower passenger Elder William Brewster, he was the son of Rev. George A. and Ernestine L. Bowman. He also descended from Plymouth Colony governors Thomas Prince and Thomas Hinckley.[2]
A Yale graduate in 1883, he devoted his life to studying the history of Mayflower passengers. Besides the Mayflower Society, Mr. Bowman founded and served as the first president of the Boston Chapter of the SAR. He edited "The Mayflower Descendant" and edited and published the magazine "Pilgrim Notes and Queries." He belonged ot the New Hampshire Society of the Cincinnati, the Pilgrim Society of Plymouth, the Cape Cod Pilgrim Memorial Association, the Old Colony Historical Society, the Boston City Club and the Yale University Club of Boston.[2]
George Bowman was unmarried and survived by his sister, Mrs. William D. Parkinson of Fitchburg.[2]
