Daniel Bowman or Bauman[1] was born in about 1772 in Lincoln County (now Alexander County), North Carolina, Colonial America.
He died in about 1832 in Iredell County (now Alexander County), North Carolina, USA. He is buried in the cemetery at Friendship Lutheran Church, Alexander County, North Carolina, USA.[2]
Name
In the diary of Johann Gottfried Arends[3] (1740-1807), who was a Lutheran pastor sent to North Carolina ca. 1773 along with the help of King George III), he discusses Daniel Bowman.
In this diary he included a list of pastoral records. One being the name and date of some people's First Communion. Among those listed at "Saut Fork"- which was probably his name for Old St. Paul's -– on May 13, 1791– were Johan Daniel Baumann's oldest children: Catherina Baumann, Daniel Baumann, and Barbara Baumann.
Daniel was the sixth son Johann Daniel Bowman. He was born and raised in Lincoln County (currently Catawba County) and later moved to Alexander County.
Daniel married Mary Magdelena Simons Bowman (1786-1832), a daughter of John Simmons of Catawba County. The marriage date is believe to be Jan 14, 1799 and took place in Rowan County, North Carolina.[5]
Daniel was one of the three men who bought the land for a church and schoolhouse of Nimrod Lunsford in 1832. His name appears as a communicant in 1836. It appears that Rev Crouse confused Daniel Bowman with his father in his research, as he himself expessed confusion on the book about the dates of birth. Rev. Crouse believed his father was called George Bowman rather than Johann Daniel Bowman. The Census Records for this time period show Daniel and not George Bowman.[13]
Residences
The U.S. Census for 1790[14] and 1800[15] list a Daniel Bowman residing in Lincoln County, North Carolina. This could be Daniel Bowman. The U.S. Census for 1810[16] also shows a Daniel Bowman in Lincoln County, North Carolina, along with a Henry and John Bowman (might have been two of his brothers). The only Daniel Bowman in the U.S. Census of 1830[17] and 1820[18] resides in Burke County, North Carolina.
Death and Burial
Daniel Bowman is buried at Friendship Lutheran Church Cemetery, near Taylorsville, Alexander County, North Carolina, USA. A photo of the tombstone is attached. He is buried next to his wife, Mary Simmons Bowman. Their tombstones are in the old part of the cemetery. When Rev. Crouse examined the tombstones in 1905, he said, "We find the graves marked by neat soapstone slabs about two and a half feet high. They have nothing on them but the names, bearing no dates of births or deaths."[19]
