Grace Sharp Bowman was born 24 July 1889 to William and Grace Duncan Bowman in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Her entire family worked in the shipbuilding industry, first in Scotland and later in Virginia.

She attended school through the second year of high school. After school she worked in the Singer Sewing Machine factory.

Grace moved in 1915 to the United States. Her parents and most siblings also immigrated from 1904 to 1919, settling around Newport News, Virginia and continuing to work in the shipbuilding industry.

In 1919 she married Charles Edwin George, an immigrant from England who had served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

The couple set up household in Newport News. In 1920 they were living with Grace's parents. In 1927 they were living in Norfolk, Virginia. In January 1928 they bought a house in the village of Craddock, where they would stay until Charles died.

Charles and Grace had three children: 1. John Bennet (1920-2007), 2. William Duncan (1921-2012), 3. Grace Margaret (1926-2015).

Grace loved to work crossword puzzles and had a rich vocabulary. Her Scottish brogue delighted her grandchildren. She was also very hard of hearing in her later years.

After Charles died in 1962, Grace moved to Rome, Georgia to live with her oldest son, John.

Grace died 11 Jan 1978 in Rome. She is buried with Charles in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, Virginia, USA in plot M-154.
