Biography

Enoch P. Bowman was born on 22 Oct 1823 in Jefferson county, Tennessee, son of John Bowman (1780 - 1859) and Mary (Wilmot) Bowman (1797 - ).

Enoch married Malvira Judd (1828 - 1855) on 13 Feb 1848 in Lee county, Virginia.

On 27 September 1850, Enoch and "Alvery" and their three-month-old daughter Mary lived in Owsley County, Kentucky. Enoch worked as a shoe maker.[1]

Their children were:

  1. Mary Elvira (Bowman) Matherly (1850 - 1872)
  2. William Martin Bowman (1852 - 1930)
  3. Mahala Jane (Bowman) Wise (1855 - 1899).

Enoch married Margaret Snowden Estes (1834 - 1912)

On 24 July 1860, "Enick" and Margaret and four children- Mary, William, Malad, and Henderson lived in Estill County, Kentucky, near Irvin. They lived with William and Jane Mills, Mary Wills (age 17), and Sally Bowman (age 19). Enoch worked as a shoe maker and owned $50 in personal estate.[2]

  4. Martha Francis (Bowman) Brown (1867 - 1963)

  6. Robert Grant Bowman (1869 - 1945)
  7. Effie Bell (Bowman) Hayden (1871 - 1947)
  8. Lou Ellah (Bowman) Pritchard (1874 - 1962).

During the Civil war, Enoch served on the Union side in Company G of the 47th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry. He enlisted on 3 July 1863 at Irvine Kentucky as a Private. He mustered out as a 3rd Sergeant on 26 December 1864.[3]

In July 1870, Enoch and Margaret and seven children- William M., Mueda J., Henderson, George, Anne, Paulina, and Robert- lived in Clover Bottom, Woodford County, Kentucky. Enoch worked as a minister while Margaret was keeping house. Son William was a farm hand. The family owned $400 in personal estate.[4]

On 10 June 1880, the couple and seven children- Henderson G., George A., Ann E., Paulina F., Robert G., Effebelle, and Louellah lived in Versailles, Woodford County, Kentucky. Enoch was again working as a shoe maker while Margaret was keeping house. Son Henderson worked in a saw mill and son George was a laborer. Margaret could not read or write and most of the children could not write.[5]

On 28 June 1880, Enoch applied for a Civil War invalid's pension, which was granted.[6]

In 1890, Enoch was living in Sweet Springs when he was counted on the Veterans schedule.[7]

On 1 June 1900, Enoch and Margaret lived in Sweet Springs Park, Saline County, Missouri. Enoch was a day laborer and had been unemployed for six months the previous year.[8]

Enoch died on 18 Feb 1909 in Sweet Springs, Missouri aged 85.[9][10]

After his death, Margaret applied for a Civil War widow's pension on 15 March 1909.[11]
