Herbert Bowman was born on 8 November 1920 in Rose Park, South Australia, the son of Jean Bowman.[1]
Herbert's mother married Bill Hill in 1925 and had three more children. Jean and Bill were charged with running a telephone betting service in 1935, but the charges were dropped after Jean died from tetanus. Herbert was not named in his mother's death notice, so it may be that he did not grow up with her.
Herbert had been working as a medical assistant in Rabaul, New Guinea for about 12 months when the Japanese invaded in January 1942. He was captured at Kokopo, just outside Rabaul and was interned as a civilian prisoner.
He died on board the "Montevideo Maru" when it was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of the Philippines on 1 July 1942.
Herbert is not mentioned in his mother's death notice in 1935, so he might have grown up somehwere else. Where? How might we find out? Davis-42955 04:52, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Scott, I looked at his birth certificate at Genealogy SA and to confirm the family and to try and find a connection between mother and son and found his mother was born in WA. Jennie Gilmore (Jean) Bowman born 1902 in WA. I have confirmed by the fact, her mother (Herbert's grandmother) signed the "Deaths for persons lost" form and she was was living at the same address given for Jean's father John Bowman when he died in 1931. I am gradually adding the family.
