Biography

John Bowne was born September 2, 1767 in Freehold, Monmouth, New Jersey. He died November 4, 1857 at age 90.

Son of Joseph Bowne (1735-1812) and Hannah Anderson (1739-1823).

John Bowne married Ann Corle c. 1789 in Monmouth, New Jersey.

Children:

  • Cornelia Bowne (1795–1802).
  • Joseph Gardiner Bowne (1804–1888).

Headline: NOTED GRAVES: Burial Ground Near Lambertville Has Been In Service Over Two Hundred Years

The Barber burial ground, nearly 200 years old, is situated on the old Barber homesteads about three miles from this city. A county paper has just published interesting facts about this ancient and well-kept cemetery. Dr. John Bowne, who practiced medicine in this part of our country for more than fifty years, first locating here in 1791, and died Nov. 4, 1857, and Joseph G. Bowne, son of the above named, member of the New Jersey State Senate from 1870 to 1873, are also buried in this historic ground.

His original account books and patient ledgers are in the collection of the Hunterton Historical Society.
