Biography

John Bowne, son of Capt. James and Mary Stout Bowne, was born about 1670 in Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ. He was a cordwainer and was called John Bowne, "cordwainer" "to distinguish him from his cousin-Capt. John Bowne." He married Elizabeth Grover, perhaps daughter of Safety Grover, [1]was a member of the Baptist Church and took little interest in the political affairs.

John and Elizabeth had the following children:

  1. James who married Elizabeth O Hartshorne August 17 1743 He and Elizabeth deeded land to James Bowne in 1719 and to Andrew Bowne in 1730.
  2. Elizabeth who married John Bray in 1725
  3. William
  4. Andrew
  5. Safety supposed son who had a daughter that married John Layton that names Safety Layton as a son in the will of John Layton.[2][3]

Research Note

In Nathaniel Leonard's will proved December 29 1763 on page 248 an Andrew Bowne (son of John Bowne) was one of the executors and the inventory was done by John Layton, Samuel and William Bowne, which could be the sons of John and Elizabeth Grover Bowne listed above. Following on pages 249-250 is a will dated for John Leyton (Layton) in which four sons are listed: Safety, Andrew, John, and William (he is under 21) to care for their mother, sister Ann until she is 18 and three other sisters: Catherine, Hester and Hannah. Thomas a son was 16 and to receive 100 Pounds when he was 18. The executors are four older sons. Clearly, the wills cited above connect Safety Grover, son of John and Elizabeth Grover Bowne, to John Layton, thought to have married his daughter.
