Time line of Andrew Jones and his wife, Rebecca Box

Rebecca Box and her future husband, Andrew Jones would have been counted in the 1790 Census of Laurens Co. SC in the households of their parents, Abraham Box and John Jones. They became apparent as wife and husband in the 1800 Census of Laurens Co. and in land deeds. They were in the 1810 Census of Livingston Co. KY , the 1830 Census of Hardeman Co. TN and the 1840 Census of Pontotoc Co. MS.

Based upon the 1850 censuses of Pontotoc Co., MS; Tippah Co., MS; Lafayette Co., MS and Clarke Co., AR the family of Andrew and Rebecca Box Jones may be described as :

(1) Sarah “Sallie” Jones Dean, age 49, was born in SC; her husband, Thomas Dean, age 54, was born in SC and they were enumerated in Tippah Co., MS with three of their children.

(2) Annis Jones Draper, age 45, was born in SC; her husband , Coleman Draper, age 52, was born in SC and they were enumerated in Pontotoc Co., MS in the vicinity of her mother, Rebecca Jones.

(3) The widow of John A. Jones (born about 1806 in SC), Mary Ann, age 37, was born in AL, and 7 of their children were enumerated in Clarke Co., AR was in household 104 adjacent to Robert Jones.

(4) Robert Jones, age 42, was born in SC; his wife, Malinda, age 40 was born in TN and they and nine of their children were enumerated in Clarke Co., AR in household 105.

(5) Mary Jones Johnson, age 40, was born in KY; her husband, Martin Johnson and 6 of their children ; were enumerated in Lafayette Co., MS.

(6) Elijah J. Jones, age 39, was born in TN; his wife, Rebecca, age 38, was born in NC and they were enumerated in Clark Co., AR.

(7) Willis Jones, age 38, was born in KY; his wife, age 34, was born in SC and they and 4 of their children were enumerated in Pontotoc Co., MS next to his mother.

(8) Catherine Jones Davis, age 37, was born in AL; her husband, Benjamin Davis, age 37, was born in SC and they and their 8 children were enumerated in Pontotoc Co., MS.

(9) Abraham Jones, age 35, was born in AL; his wife, Matilda, age 27, was born in TN and their 6 they and 6 children was enumerated in Lafayette Co., MS.

(10) Rebecca Jones Mitchell, age 31, was born in AL; her husband, Daniel Mitchell, age 40, was born in KY and they and 5 children were enumerated in Pontotoc Co., MS.

(11) Andrew Jolly Jones, age 24, was born in TN; his wife, Mary Ann, age 21, was born in TN and they and their 2 children were enumerated in Clark Co., AR.

(12) Elisabeth Jones, age 22, was born in TN and was enumerated in Pontotoc Co., MS in the household of her mother, Rebecca Box Jones.


There is an issue that is not likely to be resolved but should be acknowledged. While all the documentation indicates Andrew's full name was John Andrew Jones, Rebecca's gravestone names him as William Andrew Jones.

1790 Census of Laurens Co. SC. Abraham Box was enumerated a with wife, one son and one daughter (who could be Rebecca). There were two households of John Jones, neither of them close to Abraham Box; one household had a male over 16, a male under 16 and 3 females (the male under 16 could be Andrew) and one household had 2 males over 16. 3 males under 16 and 4 females

1793 Aug 17 --John Jones was issued a plat for 96 acres on branches of Horse Creek, a branch of Reedy River in Ninty Six District, surveyed by Jonathon Downs. The tract bordered on Samuel Neighbors, Philip Porcher and Patrick Rylie. (Abraham Box was a neighbor of Samuel Neighbors.)

1800 Census of Laurens Co. SC. Andrew Jones is enumerated beside his father, John Jones, and his household includes a woman, age 16-25 (who could be Rebecca), and a male under 10 (not included in list of known children). The household is on the same page as that of John Box (grandfather of Rebecca Box) and Benjamin Box (her uncle).

2/21/1804 Andrew Jones, planter to Lewis Saxon & Co. (other—wise Lewis Saxon & Jeremiah Hollingsworth, merchants) for "?" . 96 a. on waters of Horse Cr., b. on Arthur Taylor, Wm, Arnold, Philip Porcher, Patrick Riley, Saml, Nabours - whereon sd. Andrew Jones now lives. Wit: George Hollingsworth, Abm. Box (father of Rebecca Box), Josiah Blackwell, J.P. (page 112) (for some reason, this deed was evidently voided because the same land seems to have been sold again a year later)

9/7/1805 Andrew Jones to James Riley for $200. 96 a. on Horse Cr. b. on Philip Porcher, Abraham Riley, Saml. Nabours, John Jones, John Arnold, orig. gr. to John Jones 1792. Wit: Shadrack Box (uncle of Rebecca Box), Abraham Ryley. D.R. of Rebecca (X) Jones by Benjn. Arnold., J.Q. (page 117)

1810 Census of Livingston Co. KY has Andrew Jones enumerated on one side of Robert Box (brother of Rebecca Box) and Asa Mitchell (brother-in-law of Robert Box) is on the other side of Robert Box.

1812, Jan. 28--Andrew Jones listed with his brother, Jolly Jones as Administrators of the John Jones estate in Caldwell Co. KY

1813 private in Capt Molton's Co. Tenn, Volunteers, Col. Coffee's Regt.

1814 private in Capt Molton's Co. Tenn, Volunteers, Col. Dyer's Regt.

1820 Census of Lawrence Co. AL has Andrew Jones and wife with 5 sons and 5 daughters on same census page as James Box (possible brother of Rebecca).

1830 census of Hardeman Co. TN has Andrew Jones and wife with 5 sons and 3 daughters on page 384 of census; Robert Box (brother of Rebecca Box) , his sons-in-law, Simeon Bright and Saunders Kennedy, and his brother, Lindley Box are on page 381; Robert Box (son of Robert and Jane Goodwin) and his brothers, John Box and Goodwin Box are on page 347.

1840 census of Pontotoc Co. MS has Andrew Jones and wife

The Jones family Bible, as reproduced in the Bobbie Jones McLane’s book, indicates Andrew Jones died July 9, 1840.

1850 census of Pontotoc Co. MS has Rebecca Jones, age 68 born in SC, enumerated as head of household with her daughter, Elizabeth, age 22 born in TN.

1854 November 1 --Rebecca Jones, widow of John Jones, Private in Capt Moltins Co. Tennessee Volunteers, two services , War of 1812 was granted a military warrant for 80 acres in Mississippi that she assigned to Edwin McFarland.

1860 Census Pike County AR has Rebecca Box, age 82, b. in SC and her daughter, Elizabeth Jones, age 27, b. in TN, living adjacent to Rebecca's sons, A. J. Jones and Willis Jones. Rebecca was listed with $460 of personal estate.

Fold3.com has detailed information of this warrant for a Rebecca Collier, widow of John Jones, Private in Capt. Molton's Co., Tennessee Volunteers, Two Services War of 1812. John Jones and wife Rebecca Collier lived in Dickson County, Tennessee and he died on January 29, 1835 in Dickson County,
