Biography

Robert was born in 1872 in Balloo, Islandmagee, County Antrim, Ireland, the son of Samuel Boyd and Eliza Templeton. His birth was registered by Ellen Templeton of Mullaghboy, Islandmagee who was present at his birth.[1]

Robert was an Able Seaman on SV Lord Downshire in 1895, Official# 83938, passing away at the young age of 23[2] On May 4th, 1895, the British 4-masted barque LORD DOWNSHIRE (Captain John McMurtry), left Caleta Buena for Hamburg with a crew of 33 (including 8 apprentices) and a cargo of nitrate and was not heard of ever since. It was widely speculated that she sank in collision off the Brazilian coast with PRINCE OSCAR, July 12th but this has never been confirmed. She may also have sunk rounding Cape Horn".
