Biography

James (Boyd) Boyd Ninth Lord of Kilmarnock was born in Scotland.
James (Boyd) Boyd Ninth Lord of Kilmarnock is a member of Clan Boyd.
This profile is part of the Boyd Name Study.

James Boyd was born ca. 1596/7 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, son of Robert Boyd (bef. 1579–abt. 1597) and Jean Kerr (abt. 1574–1632).[1]

James had a brother, Robert Boyd (1595–1628).

James (39) married Catherine Crayke (19) (born on 3 Jan 1617 in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England; daughter of Robert Creyke and Margaret (Thornborough) Creyke) on 10 Aug 1636 in Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, Yorkshire.[1] In commemoration of this marriage the words "James Boyd and Catherine Crayke", with the family arms, were sculptured on one of the towers of Dean Castle, the family seat at Kilmarnock.[2] Their known children were:

  1. Margaret Mary Boyd (1637– )
  2. Jean Boyd (abt. 1644–abt. 1665)
  3. Catherine Boyd (1644– )
  4. William Boyd (abt. 1646–1692)

Some sources include the following children, without evidence (source is Ancestry Family Trees):

He succeeded as the 9th Lord Boyd of Kilmarnock [S., c. 1454] on 17 November 1640. In January 1641 he joined the Royalist association at Cumbernauld[1] in favour of Charles I. He was one of the Committee of War for the South 16 April 1644, and for Ayr 24 July 1644, and 18 April 1648.

He was included in the list of the nobility to be summoned to the Committee of Estates, in Cromwell's letter to Lieutenant-General David Leslie 17 January 1650, and was fined £1,500 under the Cromwell's Act of Grace on 12 April 1654, a sum afterwards, 9 March 1655, reduced to £500. His steady support of the royal cause appears to have financially embarrassed him, as he was obliged to wadset several portions of his estate to Sir William Cochrane of Cowdoun.

Lord James is said to have paid great attention to the trade of Kilmarnock, and to have established a school in the town for the educatioune and learning off zoung ones[sic]. His will was confirmed at Edinburgh 23 October 1655, and he appears to have died in March 1654.[2]

James died about Mar 1654 in Kilmarnock aged ~57. His will was proven (by probate) on 23 October 1655. He was buried on 13 March 1653/54 at Cottingham, Yorkshire, England.[1]

Research Notes

Ancestry.com UK, Extracted Probate Records reports 23 Oct 1655 as death date,[3] but according to Paul in Scots Peerage this was the date his will was confirmed at Edinburgh.

Boyd-11391 and Boyd-2059 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicae. There are other duplicates in this line, but older generations should be merged first.
The correct Robert Boyd should have been Boyd-506, now corected.

Hello there. Just a tidbit about one of the chidlren. I have in my family notes that James and Catherine's daughter, Mary Margaret Boyd, married George Keeble in 1655, was widowed, and then married Major Robert Beverly in Jamestown, Virginia on April 1, 1666. This is not a formal document but a family genealogy note written by a grandparent.

Please correct parents of James. James' father was not Thomas Boyd. James was the son of Robert Boyd (Boyd-2059) and Jean Kerr (Kerr-3656).

What to do with the assumed children? They are apparently without evidence - source Ancestry Trees.

Thanks!
