Muskegon Chronicle Newspaper article dated March 14, 1889
Death of Mrs. Eleanor Boyd
At two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, at the residence of her son, Alexander Boyd, Jefferson Street, Mrs. Eleanor Boyd quietly breathed he last, at the ripe old age of 88-1/2 years. Mrs. Boyd came to Muskegon in 1849 and has lived here continuously since that time. She preserved her strength with wonderful vigor until about two years ago when she had a stroke of paralysis. Since that time she had been gradually failing and last June she suffered a second stroke which left he almost entirely speechless and affected her mind seriously. March 6 her condition became critical, and since then she failed gradually, falling into a calm sleep Monday from which she never awoke.
Mrs. Boyd was born of English parents in Cookstown, Ireland; Sept 25, 1800. Her maiden name was Eleanor Harkness. She removed from Ireland to New Brunswick; thence to Wisconsin where she lived about one year, and then in 1849 to this city. In August of 1850, Mr. Boyd died, leaving her with a family of six children, all of whom lived to grow to maturity. Of these children, five are now living: William, Hugh, and Alexander residing in this city, Mrs. J.D. Cameron in Mobile, Ala., and Mrs. Edwin Potter in California. John, the other son, died in this city about 17 years ago. Mrs. Boyd leaves one brother living at Burlington, Wis., and another at Wellsboro, Penn.
Mrs. Boyd has been a residence of this city probably longer than any other women living, except Mrs. Bowen. She was bright and active in her old age and was frequently seen in public meetings and upon the streets of this city until the past two or three years. She was a member of the Congregational church from its organization and was active in church and social work.
