  • For your information the Native Land Commission was a very prestige office that was set up in 1875 to look after the legality of the sale or claim of all land in Fiji prior to Fiji being ceded to Great Britain in October,1874. After the completion of this work, the Commission was mandated to work on the subdivision of all lands in Fiji, which means the division of the Fijian people into land owning units, and then sub-dividing their land to the allocated parcels of land as per their heritage, these are land that are classified today as native lands or native reserves. Mr Boyd was one of the revered heads of the Commission whose decisions and reports still stand today. His name is always referred to by most of the Fijian people (mostly land owners) who come into the National Archives wanting to refer to some of the land decisions that was made during his tenure as Chairman of NLC.
