In all descriptions of James, Lord Boyd later called 'James Hay, Earl of Erroll' after 1758, his only child with Rebecca Lockhart (died 1761) is shown to be 'Mary - born 1754', and the one who married John Scott. But the baptismal records are confusing and contradictory, with a 'Mary Boyd', 'Margaret Boyd' and a 'Mary Boyd-Hay' all born to the Earl of Erroll and Rebecca Lockhart. Could it be that Mary died young and 'Margaret' was referred to as Mary after her sister?:
1. Mary Boyd, baptism Aug 4, 1751 Falkirk: [1]
2. Mary Boyd-Hay, birth Jul 28, 1754 Edinburgh [2]
3. Margaret Boyd, baptism Sept 27, 1754 Falkirk: [3]
The 1st Mary Boyd born to Rebecca Lockhart may have died young as the next sister (Margaret) is later referred to as an only child of her mother, and has historical references as being named Margaret but called Mary. More work needs to be done to clear this up.
And if Mary died young, then work needs to be done to establish who the correct parents for the wife of William Durham are, and whether this 'Mary' Boyd is indeed his wife.
