Biography

Mary Boyd's birthplace is unknown although the 1881 Census of Canada indicates that she was born in Ireland. Based on the ages given on various records, Mary's date of birth is estimated to be about 1841. Her death certificate gives her date of birth as August 12th 1842, age 70. One of her great granddaughter's recalled being told by her mother that the family was from Co.Down. Any known existing Irish records give Co.Londonderry as Mary's county of residence.

There is a church baptismal record for a Mary Jane Boyd, 02-Dec-1840 Address: Movanaher Parish/District: KILREA Gender: Female County Co. Derry Denomination: Church Of Ireland Father: James Boyd Occupation: Labourer Mother: Mary. The date and location in Co.Derry raises the possibility that this could be the correct Mary Boyd.

In 1861 Mary Boyd married Samuel Carrick, a schoolteacher who was living in Ballymacallion, Boveagh Parish, County Londonderry. Her father's name was given as James Boyd, but has also been indicated elsewhere as David Boyd. Her mother's name is thought to have been Lilly Laughlin and it is possible both parents were born in Scotland.

Mary Boyd’s residence at the time of marriage was Burnfoot which is a small village within the townland of Bonnanaboigh in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It lies 4 km north of Dungiven and 9 km south of Limavady. Assuming it is Burnfoot in Derry. Griffith's Valuation has a David Boyd living in Bonnanboigh. Would Burnfoot be close enough to this place for it to be a likely possibility?

Griffith's Valuation Record Information

Samuel Carrick died in 1873 and shortly after Mary and her two children left Ireland for Canada. The settled in Berlin, ( now Kitchener) Ontario.

Mary went on to have three more marriages. At age 46 she married a Mr. Christian Glady age 54 of Galt, Ontario. (Now Cambridge, Ontario.) Marriage took place on June 5th 1883 in Waterloo Ontario.W.H.Stevens & Lizzie Shuefke listed as witness.

Record of her third marriage at 53 to a Mr.Theodore Scratch, 77 Farmer on August 29th 1899 in Kingsville, Essex Co. Ontario. The 1901 Census of Canada shows Mr. & Mrs. Scratch living in Kingsville. (4) Mr.Scratch died on Feb 17th 1903 in Gosfield South, Essex county.

Record of her fourth marriage to Mr. Sanford Beach, 72 of South Gower, Ontario on September 28th 1905. Mary’s age given as 59. The 1911 Census of Canada shows them living in South Gower, Grenville County. Presumably each time her daughter and son in law moved, Mary accompanied the family; her marriages all took place in the same area where the family was living at the time.

Mary died in Kemptville, Ontario where she had been living with her youngest child. The obituary from the Kemptville Weekly Advance Ocotober 17th 1912 read as follows Mrs. Beach, Kemptville "After a lingering and painful illness death came early this Thursday morning to Mrs.Sanford Beach (nee Boyd) at the home of her daughter Mrs. Angus M.Parkinson of Kemptville. Deceased was in her seventieth year. The funeral service will be held tomorrow afternoon, internment in the Union Cemetery. "
