Biography

Robert born about 1455 -60 was the first son of Walter Boyd of Pitkindie and his spouse Marjory Scott.

Robert inherited the estate of Pitkindie on the death of his father about 1482. Soon afterwards there was a court case between Alexander Lord Glamis and Thomas Gray who farmed Balgay. The case was complex but made reference to the fact that Lord Glamis mother had been in conjunct infeftment of Balgay and that after Robert's father bought it he sold it on to Andrew Charteris. [1]

A Notarial Transumpt, following on a decreet by John Myrtoun, canon of the cathedral church of Dunkeld and commissar of George, bishop of Dunkeld, was made at the instance of Robert Boyd of Pitkindie, son and heir of the deceased Walter Boyd and Marjory Scot, relict of the said Walter on 5 Jan 1502/1503.[2]

On 14 February 1507/8 Robert Boyd of Pitkindie was granted a Charter by William, Lord of St. John, , as heir to the deceased Walter Boyd, his father, of the temple lands of Balegerno. The principal witness was Alexander Boyd, burgess of Edinburgh, who may have been his uncle. [3]

Robert married about 1480 and had issue:

  • Alexander born about 1480 heir to Pitkindie
  • Janet born about 1482 married Edmund Hay of Megginch about 1505 and had issue.
  • . John born about 1485 was a witness named after Alexander Boyd on 5 Jan 1502/3 to the Transumpt made for Robert Boyd 0f Pitkindie who by this is assumed to be his father.[4]

At Edinburgh on 15 January 1511/12, Robert Boyd accompanied his neighbours, Henry Lovell of Ballumbie and Master John Gardyne, rector of Lundie as witnesses to the Charter of Alienation granted by John Lord Flemming in favour of Andrew Lord Gray for the lands of Gotharston.[5]

Robert Boyd of Pitkindie was recorded as Absent of the Assize on 28 June 1513 when Robert Drummond and his accomplices were tried for art and part of slaughter of Gilfillan Crichton.[6]

He was never infeft in the lands of Balgay, Balard, or the Kirkton and Milton of Abernyte which his parents held.

Robert was described as deceased in a Charter by George Dundas, Lord of St. John, preceptor of Torphichin, in favour of George Irland on 20 August 1519.[7]
