Lady Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle, was born 27 October 1731[1], the only surviving child and heir of Richard Boyle, Earl of Burlington and Cork and his wife, Lady Dorothy Savile. She was baptised 24 November 1731 at Chiswick, Middlesex.[2] She succeeded her father as (6th) Baroness Clifford, 3 December 1753, his other titles either becoming extinct or passing to a cousin.[3] Along with the title she inherited Bolton Abbey, estates in Yorkshire and Derbyshire, Chiswick and Burlington House in Piccadilly and property in county Cork and other places in Ireland.[4]

She married 27 March 1748 at Lady Burlington's house in Pall Mall, St James's, Westminster, William Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington, later 4th Duke of Devonshire (born 1720, died 2 October 1764 at Spa in Germany).[5] He didn't succeed to the Dukedom until 1755 which means Elizabeth was never Duchess of Devonshire but known by his courtesy title as Marchioness of Hartington.

They had the following four children:

  1. William Cavendish, born 14 December 1748, succeeded his mother as Lord Clifford 1754, and his father as 5th Duke of Devonshire 1764[6]
  2. Lady Dorothy Cavendish, born 27 August 1750, died 3 June 1794, married 8 November 1766, William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland,[7] and had issue;
  3. Lord Richard Cavendish, born 19 June 1752, elected as a Member of Parliament for Lancaster 15 September 1773 and re-elected in 1774. In 1780 he was elected for Derbyshire but died 7 September 1781 at Naples (Napoli)[8] where he had gone for his health;
  4. Lord George Augustus Henry Cavendish, born 21 March 1754, created 1st Earl of Burlington 1831[9]

She died 8 December 1754 at Uppingham, Rutland, and was buried at All Saints, Derby on 24 December 1754.[10]
