Walter was the twin brother of Matthew Jr. See the profile for Matthew Jr. for details about the birthplace and the WWI draft registration cards. When registered for the draft in 1918, both of the twins were coal miners. By 1920 Matt's occupation was still coal miner, but though Walter later continued as a coal miner, in 1920 his occupation was listed as Winder in Rubber Factory.[1] Walter's sister Margaret, age 20 and listed on the previous page of the 1920 census, appears to have been employed by this same rubber plant. Her job title looks something like Drencher. What or where this factory was is unknown.
By December of 1923 when his twin brother was killed in an automobile wreck, Walter and his younger brother Edward were living in Latrobe. Based on the age of Walter's oldest child in the 1940 census,[2] Walter's marriage would have been before 1928. By 1940 Walter and his family were living in the same locality, Star Junction, as his brother Philip. The names and ages of the children in the 1940 census: Sylvia, 12, Jacqueline, 11, Dolores, 7, James, 5, and Edward, 2. As was the case for his brother Philip and his family, Walter moved to Los Angeles in the early 1940's.[3] Daughter Jacqueline Margaret, b. 3-7-29, was married to Ralph Richard Fager on 28 Feb 1948 in the same church in Lynwood as her cousins.[4] Walter's death certificate includes documentation of a significant condition contributing to his death, pulmonary silicosis, contracted many years earlier inhaling dust in the coal mines of Pennsylvania.[3]
