In 1881 he was two years old, living with his parents and siblings in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland where his father was employed at the gas works.[1]
By 1891 the family had moved on to Uphall, West Lothian, Scotland, where his father was a retortman for an oil company and John was a 13 year old schoolboy.[2]
His parents were still living in Uphall in the 1901 census, but John was no longer with them.[3]
