Biography

Excerpt from Beulah's World: George Washington BOZARTH (son of Aaron BOZARTH and Jane NAILOR)...was sometimes called "George" and sometimes known as "Washington" or "Wash". He was born October 4, 1825, and died April 25, 1906. He was married on November 16, 1844 to Beulah SHINN by William Hargrove, Esq., according to the Burlington Gazette/NJ Agricultural Register of December 20, 1844, page 3, column 2. George Washington BOZARTH's occupation in the 1860 Census, page 17, Southampton Township, was listed as "charcoal". No doubt he made his living, as many in the Pines area did, by chopping wood and making it into charcoal. Listed in his household beside himself, his wife and 7 of his 9 children, were Wm. MARLES, age 23 and Beulah SHINN, age 75. George's wife, Beulah, was born in West Creek, Ocean County, NJ, as stated on the death certificate of their son Aaron BOZARTH, who died October 27, 1926. She was born around the same time as her husband. George appears in the 1870 Census with his wife and 5 of his children. The three older ones were probably already married and the youngest was not yet born. George appears in the 1900 Census as the widower, head of house. His youngest daughter, Sara Ann, and her husband William GIBERSON, are also listed with their two children, Josephine and Durrell. They were living next door to Joseph B. Bozarth & his family. When George died in 1906 he was living with his son Aaron. Aaron's daughter, Helen, was 14 years old at the time. She remembered getting up early in the morning to make her grandfather comfortable before going to school. Her mother, Ellie, took care of her ailing father-in-law during the day. After dismissal, Helen would again look after her grandfather to relieve her mother.
