George Bracegirdle migrated from England to New Zealand.
Biography
Walter George Bracegirdle was posthumously born on the 12 Jan 1863 in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England.[1][2] He was baptised on the 8 Apr that year in the parish of Great Grimsby St Mary and St James.[2] His parents were Mary Ann Elizabeth Carrington and William George Bracegirdle a fishermam.[1] It has been said without supporting evidence that his father was lost at sea in a storm off Grimsby. This would have to have happened sometime after April 1862 as DNA evidence has confirmed George was William's son.
George immigrated to New Zealand on the ship Collingwood with his mother, stepfather Edward McCormick, sister Susan and brother Frederick. They departed London on April 8, 1875, and arrived at Wellington on July 9, 1875. They were listed as passengers for Taranaki and were all recorded under the surname McCormick.[3] The journey to New Zealand was not a pleasant one, with an outbreak of disease breaking out on board, but finally, George and his family arrived in New Plymouth.
