Biography

Mary was born in 1854. She married Henry Chaffey in Chalmers Church Hobart (reg 459 29/1/1873). After their marriage they moved to Victoria. Children of Henry and Mary Ann were:

1.Henry William James 1874 - 1941. Married to Winifred Stowe 1908 .

2. William Thomas Frances 1876 - 1948. m OliveSt.Clair 1907. Olive St Clair(?) may be an alias for Elizabeth Florence O'Connell Chaffey who is buried with William. (See his separate profile.)

3. Alfred George Ernest 1878 -1888

4. Eva Florence 1880. m Lawrence Alexander Henderson 1919.

5. Edward John Walter 1884. m Annie Evelyn Matthews 1910

6. Emily Jane Mary 1886. m Charles Carle 1909

Mary Ann passed away on 24th April 1929 at her sons residence, 17 Larnoo Ave West Brunswick (Trove newspapers). She is buried at Fawkner Cemetery with her husband Henry, and son Henry William.

Notes

I have not been able to trace all her siblings due to their being placed in the Queens Orphanage. The following is of great interest:

Family Notices for Mary Ann 24th April 1930 and 1931 are placed by her sister J Henderson and niece L Carter, and read - In loving memory of our loving sister and aunty. In 1932 the notice is from Mrs Henderson and Mrs Carter.

Update September 2022 with the discovery of Sarah Jane Henderson and her daughter Elizabeth Mary Carter. Sarah Jane is the unknown sibling of Mary Ann. Sarah Jane Bradbury 1st married Walter Fitzpatrick in Victoria in 1883. Her marriage certificate confirms her birth in Hobart Tasmania and her parents as William John Bradbury, brickmaker, and Elizabeth Mary Huns. Sarah is a Domestic Servant and living with Walter in Emerald Hill. See Sarah Jane's profile.
