Her parents separated while Joyce was a child and her mother entered into a relationship with Alfred Piper, who she married following her divorce in 1937. This family lived in the Tasman district and settled at 145a Waimea Rd, Nelson in the mid 1940s.
Joyce married Andy McMahon on 28 June 1950 at Westport.
This couple had three children.
In the 1949 electoral roll this couple were residing at 58 St. Vincent St, Nelson. Andy was employed as a manager.
By 1954 they had moved to 164 Kawai St, Nelson. Andy was then a butcher.
Over the years Andy worked at a butchers shop in Washington Valley, at the Freezing works in their butchers shop and also at the Fish Factory in Haven Road processing fish.
Joyce also worked at several places, initially at Hillcrest Hospital in the kitchen there, then at Salisbury girls school in the cafeteria, at the Public hospital in the kitchen and also at the Crystal milk bar cafe, again in the kitchen.
Joyce and Andy separated in the mid 1970s and Andy later remarried.
Joyce was still living at 164 Kawai St in 1978 but in the 1881 electoral roll she was living at 180 North St, Nelson.
Joyce Rose Amelia McMahon died on 4 December 1995 at Nelson Public Hospital, Nelson aged 70 years.

Andy McMahon died on 6 August 2001 aged 82 years.
