Biography

Mary was born before May 1745, probably in March or April.

Mary, the daughter of Capt. Thomas Bradbury and Sarah Merrill,[1] was baptized 19 May 1745 in Salisbury, Massachusetts.[2] The Merrill family history[1] states that she was baptized in 1744; this appears incorrect.

She married Samuel Sands[3] on 4 Nov 1767 at the Church of Christ in Buxton, Maine.[4] Both were residents of Narragannsett Number 1.

Samuel and Mary his wife joined the Church of Christ on Buxton on 19 Sep 1779.[5] [6] Children[7] of Samuel and Mary were baptized at the Church of Christ in Buxton.[8]

Information about her death and burial has not been found. If she died in 1839, she was probably in Central New York with her son Ephraim and husband Samuel. The cemetery where her husband Samuel is buried was abandoned and in disrepair until it was restored by the Jordan Historical Society in 1973[9] There is a gap between the grave of her husband and the graves of her son and his family[10], it is possible that she was buried there.

Research Notes

Determining date of birth based on sibling birthdates. Her brother Benjamin was baptized 22 April 1744, and probably born 2 March 1744. Her sister Mercy was baptized 6 Apr 1746 and was probably born 29 Jan 1746. Using these dates, Mary was born between December of 1744 and March of 1746. It is more likely that her brother was born March 1744, Mary was born about a year later and baptized in May of 1745, then her sister was born about 10 months later at the end of January 1746.
