When the Braddock's where in Sydney, Jonas started to look for his old school friend, who had been a small cobbler in England, and had gone to Australia to make his fortune. Jonas asked many people in Sydney but everyone he asked had never heard of the name before, Shortly before Jonas and his family was due to leave for New Zealand, he went into a “while-u-wait” repair shop to get some shoe laces. Jonas mentioned the name of his friends to the cobbler, who shook his head, and replied, “But of course there is a big wholesale dealer by that name.” The school friend had indeed made his “fortune.” He turned out to be the owner of a five-storey warehouse, a mansion at Pott's Point, and a Limousine car with a chauffeur, in which the Braddock's were driven all over Sydney.
