In 1848, at the age of 21, John enlisted in The US Army. John was described as 5'7", brown hair, blue eyes and a light complexion.
In 1860 John was living in Cumberland County, NC. He was a cooper in the turpentine industry.
On June 8, 1861, John was Mustered into the 2nd North Carolina Calvary, Company D, later to become to 19th North Carolina Calvary. Military Service, Confederate, at the rank of Private
On April 13, 1862, John was KIA during a skirmish at Pebbly Run, (Gillette Farm) Jones County, North Carolina.
John was laid to rest at the Gillette farm, where he died during the skirmish. The site is now part of the Croatan National Forest in Jones County, NC.
