Biography

Briceville Native Dies At Age 84

Mrs. Flossie Mae (Braden) Matthews (1902-1987), age 84, the first born and last surviving member of her family, died Friday at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee after a brief illness. She was a homemaker, an accomplished clothes maker and enjoyed raising flowers. Mrs. Matthews home was at 112 West Park Avenue, Clinton, Tennessee. The Briceville native and her husband, Frederick Mynatt "Fred" Matthews (1899-1979), moved to Clinton in 1945 when he retired from the Navy with the rank chief Navy pharmacist's mate. He died eight years ago.

She is the daughter of the late Henry Clay Braden (1874-1948) and Mary Jane (Hembree) Braden (1882-1953).

Mrs. Matthews at one time had been active in the Harriet Chapter of Rebekahs, the Order of the Amaranth and Clinton Chapter 193, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

She leaves a daughter, Mary Matthews (?-?), and special friend, Janet Taylor, both of Concord, Tennessee.

The funeral was Saturday at Martin Funeral Home chapel in Clinton with the Rev. Samuel D. Dean officiating. A graveside service and burial were held Sunday afternoon at Tennessee Valley Memory Gardens, Claxton. The family requests that memorials be made to the Christian Service Center, First Baptist Church, Clinton, Tennessee.
