William Bradford is born April 1823 in Fairhaven, Bristol, Massachusetts, United States. He is the son of Melvin Otis Bradford and Hannah Kempton.[1]
He marries Mary Swett Breed on December 15, 1847 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts, United States.[2][3]
In 1862, Boston, he is an art teacher. He is known for his paintings of ships and Arctic seascapes. He goes on several Arctic expeditions with Dr. Isaac Israel Hayes, and is the first American painter to portray the frozen regions of the north.
Bradford travels to the Arctic aboard the steamship Panther in 1869, accompanied by photographers John L. Dunmore and George Critcherson. Upon his return, Bradford spends two years in London, where he publishes an account of his trips to the north, entitled The Arctic regions, illustrated with photographs taken on an art expedition to Greenland; with descriptive narrative by the artist.
In 1874, he is elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member.
He is associated with the Hudson River School.
Bradford dies April 25, 1892 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States.[4][5]
