Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Nelly (Bradford) Dulan is a part of US Black heritage.

Nelly (aka Nellie) was born about 1835 in Florida. She may possibly have been the daughter of Aunt Dinah and Uncle Henry, who were also slaves on the same plantation.

Until later proven otherwise, her last name at birth is listed as the surname of her enslaver, Edward Bradford (1798-1873). She is mentioned in the writings of Susan Branch (Bradford) Eppes (1846-1942), daughter of Edward Bradford, as being a slave on the Bradford's plantation called Pine Hill. She was mentioned in the writings as being the wife of Emperor Dulan, a presumed slave on the Pine Hill Plantation.[1][2]

Dulan is also spelled Doolin and Doolen in other documents, and may be the surname of her husband's previous enslaver, or his actual last name at birth. If she was also on the previous plantation it may also be the surname she went by before marrying Emperor.

Nellie married Emperor Doolin on 9 October 1866 in Leon, Florida, United States.[3]

In the 1870 census Nelly (age 35) was in Leon, Florida, United States, living with her husband, Emperor, and their four children and a Penny Smith, relationship unknown.[4]

She passed away after 1870.
