Leverett was born in Methuen, Massachusetts, in 1846, the son of Capt. Leverett and Catherine (Frye) Bradley. He grew up in Methuen, where his father was a butcher by trade.[1]
Leverett stated that he was 18 years old, when he enlisted to serve in the Civil War in 1861, but he was actually only 15 at the time. He mustered in as a private in Company B of the 1st Mass. Heavy Artillery, on October 31, 1861, the regiment that his father was the captain of. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant during his 3 year term. He mustered out at Washington, D.C., on August 16, 1865.[2]
After the war, Leverett continued his education at Phillips Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1873, and then studied at the Hartford Theological Seminary. He served as an assistant to Rev. Dr. Phillips Brooks at the Trinity Church in Boston, and later at a parish in Gardiner, Maine. In 1884, he became the rector of the Christ Church in Andover, Massachusetts, where he served for three years.[3] In early 1888, he was installed at the rector of St. Luke's Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,[4]
He married in 1879, to Susan Hinckley, a native of Boston and daughter of Samuel Lyman Hinckley and Annie (Parker) Hinckley.[5] She was an artist particularly gifted in watercolors.
Leverett died in Philadelphia when he was 56 years old.[6] His body was returned to Andover, Massachusetts, for burial. His letters that he wrote home during his time in the military were posthumously published by his widow.[7]
