Richard Bradley

Profile Managers note: The information in the below biography was provided to me by Mr. Lloyd D. Bockstruck of Dallas Texas. He is a noted author and genealogical researcher and a descendant of Richard through his son Laurence.

Richard was born in Dorchester County, Maryland in [say] 1705 and died in Orange County. Virginia inter 3 October and 22 December 1785.

Richard Bradley returned to the northern part of Virginia. The earliest appearance of Richard Bradley as a resident of Spotsylvania County, Virginia was in 1733. After serving five days as evidence for Thomas Sanders in the latter's suit against Larkin Chew. the Spotsylvania County court ordered the plaintiff to reimburse Richard Bradley on 3 October, 1733 .[1]

He resided in that part of Spotsylvania County which became Orange County where he appeared on the 1734 tithable list in the precinct of George Smith. He had one tithe.[2] Henry Willis. Esq.. sued Richard Bradley for £2.15 .1 for accounts dated 4 September and 2 October 1733, and the Orange County court issued a summons 16 June 1736 which Gideon Marr executed 6 July 1 736. The case was dismissed.[3]Richard Bradley was one of the witnesses to deeds of lease and release in Orange County from William Phillips to Thomas Downer on 16 and 1 8 August 1 736.[4]Richard Bradley, Larkin Chew, and George Smith witnessed a deed from William Hawkins of St. Thomas Parish, Orange County, planter, and his wife Mary to Abraham Estes of St. Stephen Parish, King and Queen County for 110 acres in Spotsylvania County. Virginia on 1 November 1742.[5]

The Orange County court named Richard Bradley overseer of the Pamunkey Road in place of Stephen Smith whom they discharged on 23 May 1746. He was to cause posts of directions to be set up where necessary.[6]Richard Bradley, Stephen I.K. Smith, George Smith, and Joseph Reynolds were ordered to view the way from the Pine Stake Church into the road that led to Stark's Bridge in Orange County on 26 September 1746. In 1749 Richard Bradley was responsible for two tithes in Orange County.[7]

Charles Smith of Louisa County. Virginia sold Richard Bradley of Saint Thomas Parish, Orange County 73 acres adjoining Thomas Morris, Merry. and James Stevens for £ 18 on 22 November 1750.[8]On 29 November 1751 the Orange County court awarded a contract to Richard Bradley to build a bridge over Terry's Run for which he was to post a bond. On 24 January 1750/1 the Orange County court appointed Charles Cu1iis. gentleman, surveyor of the highway from Spotsylvania County line to the Main Road below the Middle Church in place of Richard Bradley.[9] The Orange County levy of 29 November 1751 included 795 pounds of tobacco for Richard Bradley for building a bridge over Terry's Run. He was not to receive payment until he gave bond to perform the same.[10] On 23 October 1755 John Mallory and Richard Bradley were the securities for Thomas Burgess for the latter's maintaining an ordinary at his home. The road gang of Richard Woolfolk. overseer of the road. included the tithables of John Henderson. Joseph Henderson, William Long, Malachi Chiles, John Shears, Reubin Daniel, Richard Bradley, Thomas Merry, William Bolling. Abraham Mayfield, Samuel Brockman, James Atkins, John Wright, and Abram Cook.[11] On 12 November 1758 Richard Bradley received payment from the estate of Thomas Merry.

According to the Orange County tithable lists, Richard Bradley had tithes for the years as follows: 1753 2 tithes 1754 2 tithes 1755 tithes 1757 2 tithes 1758 4 tithes 1759 4 tithes 1760 5 tithes 1763 4 tithes 1764 2 tithes 1765 3 tithes 1766 3 tithes 1767 3 tithes 1768 2 tithes[12]

On 22 September 1762 Richard Bradley asked the court that his list of tithes being one be added to the list of Richard Thomas, gentleman.[13]The county levy of 27 November 1766 included 1,180 pounds of tobacco to be paid to Richard Bradley for building a bridge over the river.[14]

On 12 February 1770 Richard Bradley and Ann his wife sold 75 acres in Orange County adjoining Thomas Merry, Edward Stevens. and John Stevens to John Long for £50. On 22 February 1770 John Long and his wife Isabell sold Richard Bradley 194 acres in Orange County. Virginia adjoining John Deer, William Moore. and Stephen Smith for £70.[15] On 26 November 1772 the Orange County court excused Richard Bradley. a poor man, from paying the county levy.[16] The Orange County court approved the laying out of a new road from the Tomb Stone along a ridge leaving the Pamunkey Mountain on the left hand Adam Lindsay and Thomas Garnett and on the right Joseph Chandler and Richard Bradley.[17]

Richard Bradley served on the jury to value the land on which Adam Lindsay wanted to build a grist mill in the Riga Run bounded on the opposite side by the land of William Boutwell, deceased. The jury valued the one acre at one shilling and three pence on 17 March 1774. 36 On 19 April 1774 Richard Bradley and his wife Ann sold William Bradley 50 acres adjoining Captain William Moore in Orange County for £5. The witnesses were James Smith, Joseph Wisdom. and Thomas Merry.[18]

During the Revolutionary War Richard Bradley furnished 225 pounds of beef for the Revolutionary forces. He was allowed his public service claim in Orange County on 2 November 1781.[19] According to the 1782 census of Orange County, Virginia. Richard Bradley had a household of three Whites and no blacks. His son William Bradley had a household of nine whites.[20]

Richard Bradley made his will in Orange County. Virginia on 3 October 1785 naming his sons William Bradley, James Bradley, John Bradley, and Lawrence Bradley, daughter Elizabeth Dear, and daughter Ann Shurley [sicJ. He also devised land to Thomas Dear. He appointed William Bradley and James Smith executors. The witnesses were Jeremiah Chandler. Henry Mallory. and Lucy Mallory. The will was admitted to probate on 22 December 1785.[21] Since he did not provide for his wife, she had apparently predeceased him.

I was under the impression that both Richard Bradley and his older brother, Lawrence 1689, were both born in Broseley, Shropshire, England, the sons of Lawrence (b. abt 1661-d. 1712 and Eleanor Bradley. There are baptism records in the Broseley Parish Registers. There 7 children listed for Lawrence and Eleanor in the Broseley Parish Registers. Richard b. 1706-1707 was the youngest. They immigrated to Virginia.

I descend from Lawrence Jr. who has records in Essex, Caroline, etc. where he died in 1788 in Culpeper County, VA. Shirley Edillon
