Ann Bradwell was probably born about 11 AUG 1776 at St Mary the Virgin, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Durham. (On her death certificate it is stated that Ann was born in Manchester but the only possible parents currently are from Durham.)
Ann was tried at Manchester and transported on the Experiment and arrived in Sydney on 12th June 1804.
Ann married convict Thomas Lisson in St John's Church of England (Anglican Church), Parramatta, New South Wales, on 27th August 1804. [1] Their children included:
Later she had a de facto partnership with emancipated convict, Isaac Gorrick, publican of the Wilberforce hotel and landowner. Their children included:
Ann is recorded as living at Wilberforce at the time of the November 1828 Muster.
Ann may have been Ann Bridewell.
Tried at Lancaster not Manchester?:
In 1825 Isaac Gorrick said he had eight children.
Ann's possible ancestors:
Searching through the IGI and Ancestry.com no parents with the names on the death certificate can be found in Manchester. However there is an Ann Bradwell baptised on 11 August 1776 to Jacob Bradwell and his wife Mary Hind in Middleton-in-Teesdale, Durham. This is about 100 miles from Manchester. It is possible that Ann Teale was not accurate about her grandmothers birthplace. The baptism date in Durham fits with Ann's stated age exactly.
Assuming these actually were her parents, then it is possible, using the Durham Records Online, and IGI, to establish ancestors for Ann. These ancestors lived mainly in Middleton-in-Teesdale, Durham and Romaldkirk, Yorkshire. (These places are about 10 miles apart).
The name Bradwell varies in its spelling. It is Bradwel, Bridewell, Broadwell in the various records.
Jacob Bradwell, Ann's father was baptised in Middleton-in-Teesdale on 24 April 1737. His parents were Jacob Bradwel and Rose. He married Mary Hind of Romaldkirk on 2 July 1757 in Romaldkirk, Yorkshire. They had the following children:
Jacob, Ann's father had the following siblings: John 1733, Jacob 1735-1735, Jacob 1737, Rose 1740, George 1743, Isabel 1745, Mary 1748, and Isaac 1751.
Mary Hind's parents were Robert Hind and Alicia Dent. They married on the 25th January 1731 at Romaldkirk. Robert was baptised in 1705 in Romaldkirk; Alice on the 25th May 1707. Robert and Alicia had at least three other children; John, 1732; Ann 1739 and Robert 1742.
Alicia's parents were John Dent and Jane Bailes, who married on 25th June 1702. One brother Peter can be found for Alicia. John Dent was baptised on 16 May 1676 in Romaldkirk. His father was Peter Dent. Jane Bailes was baptised on 10 March 1680 in Romaldkirk. Her father was William Bailes, baptised 17 Nov 1656. Her mother was Maria Bell. They married in Middleton in Teesdale on 9 Nov 1676. William's parents were William Bailes Sr and Elizabeth Dickson who married 29th December 1646 in Romaldkirk. William Sr was baptised in 5 May 1622, and his father was Bryan.
Robert Hind was the eldest of ten - Isabel, Agnes, Mary, John, Jane, Hannah, Matthew 1 and 2, Joseph and Agnes. His parents were Robert Hind and Mary Thompson, who married on 17 June 1705 in Romaldkirk. Robert the elder was baptised in Romaldkirk 1685. His father was John.
Mary Thompson's parents were John Thompson and Jane. She was baptised in about 1685 and died in 1746. She had a brother Thomas and two sisters Sarah and Elizabeth.
In the Middleton in Teesdale marriage registers there are Hinds, Dents and Bailes listed from the 1630's.
