Biography

  • 1821 Irish census (FamilySearch) of the townland of Eshvaugh, Parish of Kinawley, Barony of Tullyhawk in County of Cavan. Charles Brady,25, farmer, with wife Judy, 20, father Michael Brady, 60, and 2 sons Pat Brady, 4 and Thomas Brady,1. (The nearest village is Glengevlin.)
  • Shipping records - Patrick, 35yrs was a Farm Labourer, from Tullyhawk, Co Cavan, RC and could read and write. His parents were Charles and Judith. Charles was still alive in Tullyhawk. Patrick came with his wife Mary and six children in 8/4/1858 on the "Joshua". His brother, Thomas was at West Maitland.

From these 2 records, either a Patrick was born in 1817 and died and another son born in abt 1823 was named Patrick OR was born in abt 1817 and when he arrived in Australia, he put his age back 6 years, because 35 sounded better than 41. When he died, his death certificate fitted best with the latter but cemetery records with the former!

  • Death cert 29/5/1901 Patrick, a farmer, died on 29 May 1901at Carroll of Prostatic Hypertrophy and acute septic cystitis, aged 84 {shipping and cemetery records suggest 78 but 84 fits with 1821 census}. He was born in Cavan and had been here 43 years. His father was Charles Brady, farmer & mother unknown. He was married in Cavan at 25 to Mary McGrath. He was survied by 10 children ( Charles,54, Thomas, 52; Michael, 48; James,46; Terence,39; Ann, 56; Julia,50; Margaret,44; Bridget,42; Rose,37 & 1 deceased = Sarah. He was buried at the RC cemetery at Keepit by Father John O'Sullivan. Witnesses were James Coe and MJ Gallen. Informant was Terence Brady, son of Carroll.
  • Keepit Cemetery records Patrick Brady, 29 May 1900, aged 77. Headstone now in Gunnedah
  • “Settlers of Carroll” Patrick and Ann Brady (nee McGrail) and their 6 children emigrated to Australia from county Cavan, in Ireland. They left Southampton England on the Joshua on 30 December 1857 and arrived in Sydney on 6th April 1858. They came out as assisted immigrants. The passage cost four pounds and five shillings. They settled at Ravenswood near Maitland and later took up a selection at Carroll, NSW. Patrick and Mary had another 6 children, making 12 in all.
