Biography

Hugh Sobieski Brady was born November 28, 1816, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the son of Reverend Joseph Brady and Elizabeth (Foster) Brady. At the age of 16, he became a teller in the old Carlisle bank, and in 1835 went to Philadelphia and became a corresponding clerk of the Farmers and Mechanics Bank. Although he had not yet reached the age of majority, he displayed such ability in financial matters that he was sent to Wheeling, West Virginia, to take the position of cashier of the old Merchants and Mechanics Bank of Wheeling. He later served under Governor John J. Jacob as the West Virginia State Treasurer and filled that office until his appointment as Secretary of State, by Governor Henry M. Matthews in March 1877.

Hugh was vestryman of Saint Matthews P.E. Church, in Wheeling for forty years and for more than twenty years he was senior warden of that church.

On August 28, 1838, in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia, Hugh married Mary Elizabeth Caldwell, daughter of Judge Alexander Caldwell of Virginia. They were the parents of fifteen children.
