Alice Flint Obituary
Alice B. Flint, 91 yrs. died at her home in Murrells Inlet, SC, surrounded by family and friends on Sunday morning Sept. 14, 2014.
Alice was born on October 17, 1922 on Jane St in the Greenwich Village, New York City. She and her brother James were raised by her maternal grandmother, Mary Hughes in Queens, NY. She attended New York City Public Schools and graduated from Newton High School in 1939. During the war, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corp and served in the South Pacific. She served from Sept. 1943 - December 1945 with distinction, earning the Bronze Star for the Battle of Buna, Asia Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. After the war, she attended Fordham University on the GI Bill and earned her B.A. in Education while working full-time. During her time at Fordham she met Paul Flint, Jr. who was also studying for his B.A. in Education. She then joined the Department of Defense schools, teaching American children in Japan on a U.S. Army base.
Alice and Paul continued their ultra-long distance relationship in the era before email and cell phones, with Paul in the US and Alice in Japan. Upon completion of her DOD assignment in Japan, Alice rendezvoused with Paul in Rome, Italy. They married at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican on June 22, 1952. The couple settled in Washington, DC where Paul began his civil service career in the Defense Intelligence Agency, later the Dept. of Defense.
They lived in Italy and Germany for a few years during Paul's assignments abroad and they developed several lifelong friends and a lifelong passion for opera and other aspects of Italian culture.
After returning to the US, while raising their four children, Alice obtained her residential real estate license and began a life-long interest in real estate while working part-time with Lillian Harper & Associates in Georgetown.
In 1961 Alice returned to teaching, which she did full-time for the next 18 years at the John Burroughs Elementary School in Washington, DC. In 1973 she transferred to adult education, teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESL) in the Americanization School in Georgetown. Throughout her teaching career, Alice was an active member of the American Federation of Teachers, locally and nationally. She was nominated by her fellow union members to represent them at the National Convention in Toronto and was also elected to serve on the loan review board of the DC Teacher's Federal Credit Union.
In retirement, Alice and her husband Paul lived in Ghent and Rhinebeck, NY; Lewes, DE; Ossining, NY and Murrells Inlet, SC. As a couple, the Flints traveled extensively and especially enjoyed their trips to Italy. Alice loved home decorating and was able to express herself in no less than 18 homes in the 35 yrs. spent in the DC Metro Area.
Alice is survived by her children ... and her grandchildren...
