Born London, England, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Braqg, who immigrated to the United States in 1836. His mother died in 1844 and his father, a carpenter, died in 1874, at the age of 84. The youngest of seven children, Bragg learned the wagonmaker/blacksmith trade. He lived in New York until 1856, working for the Brewster Carriage Company, a national distributor. In 1852, he married Elizabeth Bassett; she died in 1879 at the age of 38. On December 10, 1872, he married Mary Harris of Cincinatti, Ohio. Bragg came to Champaign County in 1856 and first settled on a farm north of Champaign. He opened the first successful wagon shop, employing two blacksmiths and a painter. His shops were located at Neil and Washington Streets, Champaign, Illinois. An active Free Mason, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.[1]
