Richard Brain was born in 1846 at Stretton on Fosse, Warwickshire, England. He was the son of John Brain and Mary White.[1]
In the 1851 census, Richard was age 4 living at Quary Hill, Polesworth, Warwickshire with his father John Brain (37), mother Mary Brain (34), sisters Sarah Brain (12), Ann Brain (7), brothers John Brain (11), George Brain (9), William Brain (2), Robert Brain (0).[2]
In the 1861 census, Richard was age 15 living at Glascote, Staffordshire with his father John Brain (47), mother Mary Brain (45), sisters Ann Brain (18), Mary Brain (8), brothers George Brain (20), William Brain (12), Robert Brain (10).[3]
Richard Brain married Mary Ann Smith on 6 Sep 1869 at Tamworth, Staffordshire.[4] They had six known children: Mary Ann Brain (b. 1870), Alice Lydia Brain (b. 1871), Elsie Brain (b. 1880), Harry Brain (b. 1883), Edith Annie Brain (b. 1888), John Brain (b. 1893).
In the 1871 census, Richard was age 24 living at Glascote, Staffordshire with his wife Mary Ann Brain (19), daughter Mary Ann Brain (1). Occupation: Terra Cotta Maker.[5]
In the 1881 census, Richard was age 35 living at Alrewas, Staffordshire with his wife Mary Ann Brain (28), daughters Mary Ann Brain (11), Alice Brain (10), Elsie Brain (0), nephew William Brain (12). Also servant John Griffin (15). Occupation: Baker.[6]
In the 1891 census, Richard was age 45 living at Main Street, Alrewas, Staffordshire with his wife Mary A Brain (37), daughters Alice L Brain (19), Elsie Brain (11), Edith A Brain (2). Occupation: Baker.[7]
In the 1901 census, Richard was age 54 living at Main Road, Glascote, Staffordshire with his wife Mary Ann Brain (48), daughter Annie Brain (11), sons Harry Brain (17), John Brain (8). Occupation: Sanitary Pipe Maker.[8]
In the 1911 census, Richard was age 64 living at Glascote Heath, Staffordshire with his wife Mary Ann Brain (58), daughter Edith Annie Brain (22), son John Brain (17). Occupation: Colliery Worker Above Ground.[9]
Richard died in 1928 age 81 at Tamworth district.[10]
