Obituary

MR. WM. BRAITHWAITE[1]

The death of Mr William Braithwaite, a very old and highly esteemed resident of Nowra, occurred at the home in Hyam street early on Friday morning last. He had reached the big age of 80 years. The old gentle man had been ill for about a fortnight suffering pleurisy, and pneumonia supervened some little time before his death. He was native of Windermere, Westmorland (England) and emigrated to New South Wales, 52 years ago, following his brother, the late Mr. I. Braithwaite, who predeceased him some months ago. Soon after landing in Sydney he came to the tablelands, following the gold fields and thence to the coast, settling at Tomerong where he married Marion Bryce (daughter of the late Wm Bryce) who predeceased him by 10 years. After remaining at Tomerong for a short term he came to Nowra where he engaged in his calling, that of builder and contractor, and was very successful. Making a competence he lived the retired life and left his business as a trader and that of undertaker to the management of his, son, Alec, in 1919.

Deceased was a man of sterling character whose word was his bond. He took an intelligent interest in public matters and was always a generous giver to a worthy cause. He was a great supporter of the Nowra Town Baths, and despite his age, was a regular visitor to enjoy his dip. For a time he was a member of the Nowra Council, which position he worthily fulfilled. He leaves five in family, two sons and three daughters, viz, Messrs. John and Alexander Gordon ; Mrs. Minnie Carruthers (Darlinghurst), Mrs. J. H. Bryce (Nowra), and Miss A. Braithwaite, who nursed her father during his illness. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon and was very largely attended, the interment taking place in the Presbyterian portion of the Nowra public cemetery. The last sad rites at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. J. H. G. Auld, B.A.
