He served in World War I. His regimental number is not included in his record[5]. He enlisted on 29 Jul 1916, at which time he was living at his parents' residence, High Street, Preston. He served with 22nd Battalion, 16th Reinforcement. He was killed in action on 3 October 1918 near Beaurevoir, France[5].
He is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery (Plot IV, Row D, Grave No. 17)[5].
He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 17 January 1916[6].
